time-out on adding variations

When hitting the plus sign on the variations tab we are getting an "un-responsive page" warning from Chrome on a Mac. (not sure yet about other browsers/OS's) We hit wait and after several popups and often about 5 minutes we get to the variations page.
We then have the same issue when trying to add the actual variations into the variation set.
